In case you haven’t heard, on September 10, 2003 the Miami-Dade County School Board unanimously decided to shorten our 2004 summer vacation by a week. Instead of the usual 10 1/2-week summer, students will be out on June 9, 2004 and back on August 16, 2004 for only 9 1/2 weeks of vacation. The reason behind this is that the school board wants students to squeeze in more classroom time during the 2004-2005 school year before standardized tests in the spring of 2005. The 2004-2005 school year will conclude in early June 2005, so students will not be in school for more weeks than they are now - just different ones. So for all you families booking summer trips, jobs, and camps for 2004, take note of the shortened break, and plan accordingly.
