Dr. Mark Gottfried

Biologist Mark Gottfried is one of the BEAM program’s most dedicated faculty members.  Dr. Gottfried, a native of New York, has been teaching Biology at BEAM since the program was started in 1997.  Before coming to BEAM, Dr. Gottfried taught 7th and 8th grade general science and 9th grade Biology in the Highland Oaks Middle School gifted program before HOM became a grades 6th through 8th school.

This year he is teaching Honors Biology, Honors Gifted Biology and AP Biology.  He has been the chairperson of NMBHS’s Science Department since the 2000-2001 school year.  He is certified to teach middle school science, high school Biology and gifted students.

Dr. Gottfried enjoys taking students on field trips to places such as Metrozoo and Lion Country Safari where students can both learn and have fun.  He has high hopes for a Metrozoo trip this year, which could include a stop at the zoo’s new Wings of Asia aviary.

When Dr. Gottfried started teaching 15 years ago, he had just graduated from the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) with his Ph.D. in biological oceanography.  He thought he would only teach for a year or two while his then-future wife finished her Ph.D. in psychology from University of Miami.  However, he found he enjoyed teaching -- at least more than writing research grant proposals.

If he had continued his original research path, he might today be studying the effects of global warming on our planet’s coral reefs and the ecosystems they sustain.  Dr. Gottfried’s graduate work at RSMAS focused on the study of corals as well as phytoplankton and zooplankton interactions (in other words, studying the microscopic plantlike organisms that float around in the ocean, and what happens when other organisms eat them).

Besides teaching, Dr. Gottfried now enjoys the Miami International Film Festival and traveling around the world with his wife.  This summer, they traveled to the Balkans, Italy, and Israel.  He would be more than happy to share his travel photos, as well as advice on how to help your BEAM student succeed in his class and school in general.  If you would like to contact him, he would prefer an email to markgottfried@usa.net, rather than phone calls which interrupt class. You can also visit his website.
