Congratulations to the BEAM Program for being one of 25 semi-finalists from around the country in the competition to receive an InvenTeam Grant from The Lemelson-MIT Program. Launched in 2002, the InvenTeam Grant competition seeks to foster inventiveness in high school students by providing three awards of $10,000 to invent something of real benefit to their schools or local communities. The BEAM Program has proposed to use an InvenTeam Grant to fund the creation of the “Batholift,” a device intended to aid the physically impaired with the process of safely getting in and out of the bath or shower. Over the past few months, students in BEAM’s 10th grade Anatomy/Physiology classes collaborated with an advisory group of elderly people to decide to invent the Batholift and propose the idea to The Lemelson-MIT Program. Next school year, the 11th grade Physics classes and the robotics group will design and test prototypes of the Batholift. Should BEAM receive the $10,000 award, the final Batholift design will actually be produced and distributed. In 2002, the three InvenTeam Grants were awarded to three high schools in New England, to create a glare reduction device; a snow removal system based on underground heating; and a solar powered house lamp. We are all keeping our fingers crossed that this fall will bring news of an InvenTeam Grant coming to BEAM for the Batholift project. Stay tuned! |
