Congratulations to approximately 20 members of the BEAM class of 2004 for
successfully completing 125 hours of part-time work this past summer at Cordis
Corporation in Miami Lakes, a medical device corporation that is a subsidiary of
Johnson & Johnson.
2003 marked the seventh year for this program, which pairs BEAM students
with Cordis employees. The
employees act as the students’ supervisors, usually on a one-to-one basis, for
six weeks from early July to mid-August. Students
assist their supervisors with their daily work, ranging from administrative
duties in Cordis’s Human Resources Department, to writing cardiovascular
catheter quality control standards for the Engineering Department.
This
latter job was that of BEAM student Veronica Herrera, who says she and her
supervisor spent most of her hours analyzing the various ways catheters and
stents could be defective, and classifying them as either “acceptable,”
“defective,” or “failing.” Veronica’s
work will make it possible for Cordis to save money by clarifying the quality
control process.
Veronica
says her summer job at Cordis gave her “an inside view into what the outside
world is like,” and that all of the Cordis employees were very supportive.
Even though she plans to study veterinary science and not go into manufacturing,
she feels her time at Cordis was well spent.
It is worthwhile to note that two
previous BEAM interns have been hired to work at Cordis during the school year -
one in the Legal Department and one in Engineering.
All
of the participants appreciate the efforts of BEAM Anatomy and Physiology
teacher Peter Saponaro, who coordinates the program for the BEAM students.
He recruited the 20 students primarily from his Anatomy/Physiology class
this past May.
If
your BEAM student is a member of the class of 2005 and will be taking
Anatomy/Physiology, keep an ear open for an announcement next May that Cordis
will again be hiring for the summer of 2004.
Again, congratulations to all of this summer’s participants, and thank
you, Cordis, for providing this wonderful opportunity. |
