As early as students start 9th grade, it is crucial to begin planning to apply for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program. This program is funded by Florida Lottery revenue, and makes it possible for students to earn a partial or even full-tuition scholarship to a Florida public college. A student can use the scholarship for a Florida private institution, but will not get any more money than what they would need to attend a “comparable” public institution as defined by the state. You also need to know that the full tuition scholarship requires students to earn at least a 3.5 GPA. Weighting for more challenging higher level courses is prescribed by law as .25 per course per semester or .50 per course per year. Furthermore, the full tuition scholarship requires students to complete at least 75 hours of community service. It also requires students to earn at least a composite score of 1270 on the SAT or 28 on the ACT. All these requirements mean students should meet as soon as possible with BEAM Counselor Leslie Stevens to make sure they are on track to earn the full tuition Bright Futures Scholarship. Students and parents should also visit the Florida Bright Futures Homepage. One last note about community service hours: BEAM Lead Teacher Dr. Barbara Rothstein highly recommends that students who want an edge on their college applications design a long-term community service project. She and Dr. Mark Gottfried are available and eager to assist students with this. Please contact the BEAM office for more information.
