By now you have probably learned that while students at North Miami Beach Senior High School usually take six classes a year, they don't go to each class every day. Instead, they only go to three classes one day, and the other three classes on the next day, switching back and forth day to day. This works out to classes that last for an hour and 40 minutes. This system is known as "block scheduling," and may be something completely new for you or your BEAM student. In fact, block scheduling has been catching on over only the past 10 years or so. School systems have found that it is especially good for science classes, which often include activities that require setting up experiments and taking them down, and cleaning up areas. All in one class period an activity can be introduced with a demonstration, the lab activity completed by the students, and the results of the lab discussed. One note of caution: some students find it difficult to maintain an attention span of 100 straight minutes, especially if most of the class time is used by a teacher's lecture. If you are concerned about this, ask your student's teachers on Open House night (October 14, 2003) what teaching methods they use to keep the class engaged. Many teachers will tell you they use a variety of instructional methods, so feel free to ask for examples. For those of you who would like to know where your student is during the class day, here's the schedule. Note that BLOCK C with Lunch 2 is not used if the student has a science class scheduled for period 5 or 6, so their science is not interrupted: BLOCK
A 7:25-9:40 BLOCK
B BLOCK
C with Lunch 1 11:30-1:45 BLOCK
C with Lunch 2 11:30 - 1:45 Period 7 1:50-2:40 |
