Dr. Barbara Rothstein

Our rambunctious leader of the magnet program, Dr. Barbara E. Rothstein, is affectionately nicknamed “Mother Goose” by the BEAM students.  She does feel a strong connection and commitment to the BEAM students, calling them “our children.”

Dr. Rothstein has been at North Miami Beach High School since 1982.  She first started working for the Miami-Dade County Public School System in 1975 as a science teacher.  Dr. Rothstein earned her Ph.D from Boston University in 1976, with her Dissertation in Ecology and Zoology-Zoogeography-Physiology.

She has been an environmental consultant for Nova University and Professor of Biology at Barry University, Southeastern Medical School, Florida International University, and Boston University.

Since 1989 she has been a science editor for HBJ and Holt, Rhinehart, and Winston textbooks. She has had many papers and articles published since 1969.  She also attended art college while she was still in high school through a dual enrollment program.

“Mother Goose” is also an avid reader.  She enjoys nature photography. She describes herself as a crafts person.  She loves it!  She recently took up jewelry making again.  Her new craft endeavor is learning woodworking with her husband.  Over the summer she revisited Boston and every museum there. She also explored Lake Champlain in Vermont. - Tracey Verdoni
